NAFLD or MAFLD – Is it Time for a Name Change?

You’re probably familiar with the term nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is considered a diagnosis of exclusion and refers to the presence of fatty liver disease without any known causes.

Interestingly, research over the past few years suggests it’s time for a nomenclature change.

    Why?

It turns out that NAFLD describes fatty liver disease that almost always goes hand in hand with metabolic dysfunction, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes – making metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) a more accurate description.

Whether to adopt the new terminology is currently being debated, though the results of studies indicate that the prevalence of MAFLD is about similar to the prevalence of NAFLD.1
