The Peptide Revolution: Why It’s Only Part of the Solution

It’s safe to say that GLP-1 medicines (Ozempic, Wegovy, Monjauro) have brought therapeutic peptides squarely center stage. And with good reason! These powerful peptides offer previously unparalleled benefits to people with diabetes and weight issues. But research indicates it goes much deeper than that. They show promise for many inflammation-based illnesses like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular disease, kidney and liver conditions, and more.

Why is that? Peptides work differently from many conventional therapies by supporting healthy physiology and restoring function. They are being studied for benefits in weight loss, longevity, tissue recovery, cognitive function, inflammation reduction, and immunity – to name a few.

But to see their full benefit and to garner lasting results, they must be used appropriately and as part of a strategy for whole-body health. And foundational to whole-body health, of course, is gut health. A balanced microbiome sets the stage for nutrient absorption, healthy levels of inflammation, proper immune function (both competence and tolerance), and digestive health.

Additionally, beneficial microbes produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have a myriad of benefits, including reducing local and systemic inflammation and initiating the release of GLP-1.

Dysbiosis not only reduces SCFAs but increases proinflammatory mediators associated with a myriad of chronic conditions, as well as aging. That means gut health is an essential component for achieving optimal results when working with peptides.

Although GLP-1 agonists have eclipsed other peptides, they are just a few of many, with decades-long track records for healing in multiple ways. Here are a few of the most commonly prescribed peptides, and their relationship to the gut:
