Optimizing Patient Outcomes with the Biocidin Botanicals Professional Line

How to Use Support Products for Gentle, Integrative Healing

by Emily Hernandez, ND

Creating protocols is a true art. It took me years of clinical practice to gain confidence in developing protocols that were effective, yet comprehensive and easy to use.

Yes, there are pre-designed treatment protocols out there. But I found it took a functional medicine lens to adjust and personalize them to meet each patient’s needs.

Over the course of my 10+ years in private practice, Biocidin Botanicals formulas became my clinical mainstays. Why? Because I found them to be extremely effective in helping my patients detox and restore microbial balance – a foundation for healing.

In my last article, I described how Biocidin® (available as Biocidin Liquid, Biocidin Capsules, and Biocidin LSF) literally transformed my practice – contributing to better patient outcomes overall. In this article, I’ll talk about how to use other products in the Biocidin Botanicals professional line to further enhance clinical outcomes.

Enhancing clinical protocols with Biocidin support products

When I first started using Biocidin in my practice, I used it as a standalone treatment. With its ability to dismantle biofilms and modulate immune function, it proved to be an effective, broad-spectrum tool for helping patients balance their microbiomes as a first step in restoring optimal health. As a result, it quickly became a core supplement in my practice.

As my clinical experience deepened, I found that adding in supportive products from the Biocidin product line led to faster symptom relief and a more comfortable healing journey for patients. Here’s how I incorporated these six support products into my treatment protocols:

1. G.I. Detox+®
Essential for reducing toxic load

G.I. Detox+ is a potent, broad-spectrum binder that combines:

  • Zeolite clay
  • Activated charcoal
  • Humic/fulvic minerals
  • Silica
  • Apple pectin
  • Aloe

This product became just as much of a staple in my practice as Biocidin itself. Because Biocidin is a potent antimicrobial and biofilm buster, it's imperative to have patients use a binder to “mop up” microbial debris and inflammatory contents that can escape biofilm.

When our emunctories (detoxification organs) are overwhelmed, “die-off” or “herxing” reactions can occur. Die-off is a direct result of the body’s inability to remove toxins efficiently, often due to exposure to high levels of toxins or issues with detoxification pathways. These reactions typically look like a temporarily heightened version of your patient’s existing symptoms (gas, bloating, malaise, headaches, and body pain, for example).

Die-off is a common experience when introducing an antimicrobial as endogenous microbial toxins are released. G.I. Detox+ not only helps to mitigate these die-off reactions but also helps mitigate the continual influx of exogenous toxins to which we're all exposed daily.

Clinical pearl: Start with G.I. Detox+ first!

In my practice, I often started patients on G.I. Detox+ for a few days before introducing Biocidin. This way the binder could start absorbing toxins that were already circulating – helping to lower the body’s toxic load. Once Biocidin was added and biofilms were being disrupted, G.I. Detox+ was already in place to catch what was being mobilized, such as:

  • Oxalates
  • Histamines
  • Heavy metals
  • Mycotoxins
  • Environmental toxins
  • Microbes and microbial metabolites (parasites, viruses, LPS, etc.)

Most of the time, I started patients on G.I. Detox+ just a day or two before starting Biocidin or other products. But for more chronically sick patients with a high toxic burden, I would give them 1-2 weeks on G.I. Detox+ before starting an antimicrobial. This was extremely helpful for relieving stress on detoxification organs (liver, kidney, lymphatic system) and reducing die-off symptoms while also allowing for better tolerance once Biocidin was introduced.

For patients dealing with mycotoxin illness, I would start them on a double dose of G.I. Detox+ first to more quickly reduce the mycotoxin load.

2. Proflora® 4R:
Supporting a resilient gut microbiome

Biocidin’s spore-based probiotic is unique because it combines three researched-backed strains with anti-inflammatory and soothing botanicals:

  • LactoSpore® Bacillus coagulans- MTCC
  • MuniSpore™ Bacillus clausii- CSI08
  • Bacillus subtilis DE111®
  • Quercetin
  • Marshmallow root
  • Aloe vera

Spores provide an excellent way to support the health of the microbiome. They are resilient to heat and acidity, which means they are able to reach the intestines without requiring excessive amounts. Spores not only provide beneficial flora, but they also help recondition the gut with immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties. This allows other beneficial microbes to thrive. What’s more, these spores are SIBO and histamine safe – they don’t have anything in them to exacerbate these conditions.

The addition of botanicals can also help reduce leaky gut symptoms. Quercetin is a natural antihistamine that supports tight junctions of the gut, while marshmallow and aloe are soothing to the mucosal tissue.

With 4 billion CFUs per capsule, this once-a-day probiotic is easy to take. My patients often felt its benefits shortly after starting it, experiencing less bloating and gas and more regular bowel movements.

Clinical pearl: Introduce Proflora 4R early for optimal gut balance

Because of its many benefits I typically started patients on Proflora 4R early in the protocol. After introducing G.I.Detox+, I had them add in Proflora 4R to start supporting healthy digestive function.

Having beneficial microbes present to crowd out opportunistic and dysbiotic microbes seemed to enhance the efficiency of Biocidin, as there were fewer offenders to address.

Proflora 4R is a product that can be continued once the antimicrobial is stopped, and many of my patients noticed such a difference in their digestion and health that they decided to stay on it long-term.

3. G.I. InnerCalm®:
Restoring gut barrier integrity

With so many gut-healing products on the market, it can be difficult to choose which one to use. One of the reasons I love G.I. InnerCalm is because it provides multi-system support, helping to restore gut barrier function while also calming the nervous system. This unique formula contains:

  • L-glycine
  • Quercetin
  • PepZin GI™ (Zinc L-Carnosine)
  • GutGard® (Licorice root extract)
  • Aloe vera
  • Ginger
  • Chamomile
  • Lemon balm

Many patients dealing with GI conditions or general health concerns are stuck in sympathetic dominance, which is obstructive to healing. Balancing the nervous system using calming amino acids and nervine botanicals helps reduce symptoms and paves the way for more efficient and optimal healing. This formula does not include glutamine because glutamine has the potential to convert to glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. Instead, G.I. InnerCalm uses L-glycine to support protein synthesis and connective tissue repair while soothing the nervous system and supporting mood and sleep.

I found this product offered my patients quick relief from symptoms such as bloating and gas, indigestion, heartburn, and anxiety or “nervous stomach.” Although you can take G.I. InnerCalm at any time of day, drinking it before bed helped many of my patients fall asleep faster and sleep better overall.

Clinical pearl: Use G.I. InnerCalm as a healing bedtime tea

In addition to L-glycine, G.I. InnerCalm also contains chamomile and lemon balm – botanicals that also support relaxation, which makes this formula an excellent one to use before bedtime. It mixes well in warm or hot water and tastes great!

4. Olivirex®:
Targeting persistent infections

Olivirex® is another broad-spectrum antimicrobial formula for targeting viruses and other infections. A mix of high-potency olive leaf extract and synergistic botanicals, it can be used by itself or along with Biocidin. Its ingredients include:

  • Olive leaf extract (375 mg per capsule)
  • Low-dose botanicals:
    • Garlic, Noni, Uva ursi, Milk thistle, Cordyceps, St. John’s wort, Dandelion, Goldenseal, White willow, Bladderwrack, American ginseng

Olivirex can be used as a preventative throughout cold and flu season or in higher doses to treat acute and chronic viruses.

Clinical pearl: Use Olivirex for resistant cases

I often layered in this product when addressing:

  • Viruses (acute or chronic)
  • Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, H. pylori, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, etc.)
  • Methane-dominant SIBO
  • Chronic yeast infections

Typically, I waited for patients to progress past the first month of treatment with Biocidin before adding Olivirex so as not to overwhelm their systems. It is a very potent formula, so I suggested patients titrate up slowly and take Olivirex with food to avoid digestive upset.

5. Biotonic ®:
Supporting resilience and energy

Biotonic is a combination of two Chinese herbal formulas that include a blend of 13 adaptogens and bitter herbs:

Astragalus root (Huang Qi), Eleuthero root (Wu Jia Shen), Black Bean prepared Fo Ti root (He Shou Wu), Sweet Wormwood herb (Qing Hao), Atractylodes root (Bai Zhu), Chinese Peony root (Bai Shao), Chinese Yam root (Shan Yao), Codonopsis root (Dang Shen), Ginger root (Gan Jiang), Poria sclerotium (Fu Ling), Tangerine rind (Chen Pi), Turmeric root (Yu Jin), Honey prepared Licorice root (Zhi Gan Cao)

Supporting both the adrenals and digestive function, this glycerin can be used as a daily restorative elixir. This pleasant, ginger-tasting bitter and adaptogen formula can help move the needle when patients' vitality has dwindled. Its actions include:

  • Maintaining healthy energy levels*
  • Promoting resilience to stress (including stress from die-off reactions)*
  • Improved healing capacity with adaptogenic herbs*
  • Stimulation of digestive enzymes and bile flow*
  • Improved digestive function, resulting in less bloating and gas and more regular bowel movements*

Clinical pearl: Add Biotonic for chronic patients with low vitality

Although anyone can benefit from this formula, I specifically added it to protocols for patients with chronic health conditions like my Lyme and mold patients or those suffering with SIBO for long periods of time. They presented with little to no energy or perhaps were “wired and tired.” Accumulated stress from their chronic condition had become an obstacle to healing.

Although gentle, Biotonic proved to be an effective formula. My patients noticed more consistent energy, less digestive discomfort, and more regular bowel movements.

6. Liver GB+™:
Optimizing detox pathways

A recent addition to the Biocidin line, Liver GB+ is formulated to support liver and gallbladder function. It combines powerhouse nutrients like TUDCA, a bioidentical bile acid, and Silyphos®, a patented milk thistle, with time-tested botanicals:

  • Artichoke
  • Silyphos (Milk thistle with phosphatidylcholine)
  • Turmeric
  • TUDCA (bioidentical bile acid)
  • Tangerine peel
  • Ginger
  • Bupleurum

Microbiome detoxification – particularly when it addresses biofilm – can take a toll on the emunctory organs as toxins and microbial debris are mobilized. Liver GB+ supports the gut-liver axis by providing hepatoprotective antioxidants as well as bitter and cholagogue herbs that enhance digestive enzymes and bile production and flow. Bile has many important functions, including supporting microbial balance and preventing bacterial overgrowth in the intestines.

Clinical pearl: Use Liver GB+ to relieve side effects from GLP-1 therapy

Patients on GLP-1 therapy for diabetes or weight loss often experience unwanted side effects from delayed digestion. Whether your patients are on GLP-1 therapy or not, Liver GB+ enhances digestion to reduce symptoms such as:

  • Nausea*
  • Gastroparesis*
  • Constipation and diarrhea*
  • Bloating*

Liver GB+ is a good supplement to layer in for any patient struggling with detoxification or liver/gallbladder function. It can be used at any point in the protocol to support mobilization of toxins for more efficient excretion.

Building a synergistic protocol

For treating gastrointestinal conditions related to dysbiosis – such as IBS, SIBO, Candida or yeast overgrowth, parasites, and H. pylori – I followed a structured approach tailored to the individual patient:

  • Begin with G.I. Detox+ to bind and eliminate toxins.
  • Introduce Proflora 4R and G.I. InnerCalm to support microbial balance and aid gut repair.
  • Incorporate Biocidin to target pathogens and biofilms.
  • Layer in additional support products as needed: Olivirex for infections, Biotonic for adrenal support, and Liver GB+ for detox optimization.

By integrating these supportive products from Biocidin Botanicals, you can create effective, highly personalized treatment strategies that enhance patient wellbeing and accelerate healing – a transformative win for both patient and practitioner.
